Just saw the band a few days back at Ronnie Scott's. Compositionally dull, playing-wise really disappointing and generally I found it all pretty uninspiring on a musical level and really not happening. Can't help still wondering what all the fuss is about. Sorry.

He's talking about the Motley Cure band, it's Robert Smith doing Motley Crue covers.

Vital INFORMATION was the band I caught the other night. Won't be any hurry to see them again either. Shame. Was hoping for better music following everything I'd heard spoken about S. Suprised at your comments Gary - I saw VI on their middle Saturday at Ronnie's and the thought they were on good form. Admittedly didn't see the second set (had a long drive home) but what I did see was enjoyable. I like Steve Smith - he's developed quite a distinctive style over the past 7/8 years. He's one of the few remaining drummers who maintain some of the feel of the great US jazz players of days gone by. Plus I really like the other players, esp Frank Gambale. There are not too many bands with this kind of overall quality. Have you never really liked them, or was it just this performance?

I saw VI at ronnies last year, or the year before, can't remember. I share the same feelings as you. I was kind of bored tbh. Steve Smith is an amazing drummer,(technically), but in all honesty, his playing has never floated my boat in any shape or form. As far as the bands music, it really does very little for me.

When I was getting into your playing with Holdsworth/42 my dad always used to go on about how amazing you were at 16 in Syd Lawrence's Orchestra. My dad drummed with BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra, and cruises, Geraldo etc. He was in the Glasgow scene in the 60s and I think may have played with Jim Mullen for a while. He was also friends with Bobby Wishart. But he remembered you in Syd's orchestra via an alto player - Andy ? Surname escapes me. He was in the resident band at the Beachcomber in Cleethorpes when you appeared there in '76ish.
